Glastonbury Abbey Friends Association

A voluntary organisation supporting Glastonbury Abbey

Click here to visit the Friends' own web site.

Glastonbury is one of the oldest Christian sanctuaries in England and one of the holiest. Many famous names are linked with the Abbey in myth, legend and history: Joseph of Aramathea, King Ina of Wessex, St Dunstan, Henry of Blois and Henry the Eight but of those who lived here the greater number were humble men who gave themselves to serve God in this place. Here they worshipped and prayed, studied and laboured and worked with their hands. Their spirit lives on though the Abbey church is only a ruin and the monastic buildings destroyed. Here in this lovely place we to can find the peace they sought and remember the great influence the Glastonbury Abbey had on church life here in England, and the part it continues to play today.

The aims of the Friends are:

  • To encourage community interest in the Abbey and its grounds;
  • To foster links between the Abbey and the Town and other similar Associations both here and abroad;
  • To arrange lectures, performances, exhibitions or similar events;
  • To raise money for the Associations projects encouraging the development of the facilities;
  • To offer voluntary help to the Abbey;
  • To further the charitable purposes of the Abbey.

The Friends meet at least four times a year. A programme of activities can be obtained from the Abbey or found on the Events page. A membership card gives reduced admission to the Friends' events.

The Annual General meeting is held at the Abbey on February 13th each year, or the nearest working day to this date.

Details of additional events, and any volunteer help that may be needed, will be sent to all members.
