Orchestra in a Field launches Scrapheap Instrument Challenge

The competition is open to children of all ages to make a musical instrument out of recycled materials.

It is one of several competitions being run as part of the event's Schools' Programme.

Orchestra in a Field is the brainchild of Charles Hazlewood and is being held at the Abbey on June 30 and July 1.

“We want to get the message across that Orchestra in a Field welcomes children,” explains Hazlewood, “because if we don’t introduce kids to classical music, there won’t be an audience for it in 20 years time, and the world will be a poorer place for it!”

“No other festival is offering ‘classical music as family entertainment’ in quite the way that we are.  Our festival will be the very opposite to a stuffy concert hall: there’s a huge kids area, and loads of entertainments on offer designed especially with kids and families in mind.  Quite simply, there’s no better way of introducing kids to classical music. They can run about and be themselves: they don’t have to ‘behave a certain way’.  But we don’t want them sitting passively either – we want them to get involved and have a go!”
